In a detailed conversation with Baradwaj Rangan on Galatta Plus, the filmmaker traced how a concept once intended for Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan eventually found its ideal match in Tamil star Sivakarthikeyan.

Murugadoss revealed that the project has roots going back nearly a decade. He initially pitched the essence of the character to Shah Rukh Khan around seven or eight years ago. Khan, he recalled, described the idea as “very sweet.” Despite the encouraging response, the film never materialised with him.
The director explained that after one of his planned children’s films did not move forward, he lacked the time to restart the process with a new leading man. With schedules pressing, he needed a “comfortable hero” whose dates were immediately available. That search steered the project in a different direction.

That urgency led Murugadoss to Sivakarthikeyan. According to him, SK’s body flexibility and screen presence made him the right fit. Once the actor was confirmed, Murugadoss and his team began reshaping the script, adding new layers tailored specifically to Sivakarthikeyan’s abilities and appeal.
The filmmaker also revealed that SK will be seen in two strikingly different looks in Madharasi. In one version, the protagonist appears with a long, heavy beard. This phase, Murugadoss clarified, reflects a period of disillusionment in the character’s life, linked to what he described as a “love failure,” hinted at through a recently released song.
In contrast, the second look, featuring a trimmed beard, portrays another stage of the narrative, possibly spanning months before or after this personal turning point. These visual transformations highlight the emotional arc at the heart of the story, presenting Sivakarthikeyan with a challenging, layered character.
